Another supportive evidence to the holistic functioning of the body and it’s systems is the effect of thoughts and mental processes on not just one’s moods and emotional state but also our physical well-being. It involves: bringing one’s complete attention to the present experience on a moment-to-moment basis; paying attention with intent and on purpose, like a child having a first experience, noticing all the sights & sounds, non-judgementally observing your emotional state and thought processes on a moment-to-moment basis.
It has also been described as the self-regulation of attention so that it is maintained on immediate experience, thereby allowing for increased recognition of mental events in the present moment with an attitude characterized by curiosity, openness, and acceptance.
Some choose to practice this through seated meditation, others may naturally be practicing it on a daily basis in their jobs and at home. All it involves is being present at the moment…whether you’re mowing the lawn, busy at a task at work or out with a friend. It means making a deliberate effort to paying attention to every detail, listening, absorbing, and being completely engaged at the task on hand at the moment.
According to the Dalai Lama, “There are only two days a year when we can do nothing. One is called yesterday, and the other tomorrow.” So, enjoy your TODAY moment to moment. 🙂
